Study abroad is an investment in the future and can be affordable. It is important, however, that students determine early (even before they have selected a specific program) that they will have sufficient resources to cover all the costs of study abroad whether payable to NMSU or to another program provider. It is better to overestimate than to underestimate your costs. Students should explore all avenues for obtaining the funds necessary to carry out a study abroad program. Some student visas will allow you to work. Your host university/provider will have information regarding local employment opportunities but do not to expect income during the time you are abroad. The best way to learn more about the costs of education abroad is to meet with one of our Education Abroad Advisors, but in general, most students can expect the following costs:
Application fee, program fee and/or deposit
Tuition and fees
Passport and student visa (where applicable)
International health insurance, health evaluation and vaccines (where applicable)
Housing and meals
Airfare and local transportation
Books and supplies
Personal Expenses
Excursions, other travel during free time
Military Benefits
Under certain conditions, veterans’ benefits may be applied to study abroad. Please contact NMSU Military and Veterans Programs to determine eligibility.
NMSU College Assistance Migrant Program (CAMP)
The NMSU College Assistance Migrant Program provides financial assistance to students who participate in an education abroad program. If you are a member of CAMP, please contact NMSU College Assistance Migrant Program (CAMP) directly to apply.
